September 2023

Dear Trinity College London South Africa community,

In August we received our first South African entries for the new repertoire only digital pathway exams. This exam type offers a pathway for those who prefer to showcase their musical achievements through a programme of repertoire instead of a combination of pieces and technical work. Launched in July, we were excited to receive our first entries from Jason Georghiou (KZN) and Helen Broekmann (WC). Thanks for kicking things off!

You may recall I asked for volunteers to record pieces from the existing piano syllabus for the new piano syllabus launch event in London later this month. I submitted over forty names to the London team and they have chosen to include two of our students - bear in mind they had thousands from around the world to select from and the end result will only be a 30min video. The SA students selected are:

  1. Chloe Thomas (Teacher: Graham Diesel) - Le Ccoucous Bénévoles (Grade 3)
  2. Hugo Wentworth (Teacher: Anna Stoddard) - Walk in the Park (Grade 5)

Timetables and appointment slips have largely been completed and distributed for Music, Drama and Rock and Pop exams happening from September to November. I'm aware Western Cape Drama appointment slips are set to go out over the next couple of days. If you have yet to receive your appointment slip or if there are issues, please let your rep know.

Best regards,

Peter

As the busy South African Music and Drama exam season approaches, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all candidates, teachers, and parents. The positive sentiments expressed by the Trinity South Africa team are truly heartening, and the rise in exam registration numbers suggests an encouraging trajectory for performing arts education in the country.

We are excited to announce that over the next three months, a talented panel of nine international examiners will be assessing South African candidates in Music and Drama. Among these esteemed professionals, three hail from South Africa, exemplifying the global excellence and expertise that Trinity College London is known for.

The inclusion of South African examiners in our international panel is a testament to the exceptional quality and standards they bring to the table. Their contribution has been pivotal in the success and diversification of our examiner panel in recent years.

The new 2023 Drama specifications are now live, as of the beginning of September. This coincides with the start of Trinity's month long Gauteng drama exam session which started earlier this week. The majority of the session will be examined by Richard Hansom, one of Trinity's accomplished drama examiners. Here's a bit more information about Richard.

Chris was born into a family of musicians and teachers and has been teaching since the age of sixteen. He currently runs a busy piano, string and theory teaching practice in West Cornwall, and als
