Trinity's Drum Kit Syllabus 2020 – 2023: Grade 8 - Exercise 1

DAVE ODART PLAYS THROUGH EXERCISE 1 FOR THE  GRADE 8 DRUM KIT EXAM

Exercise 1:

This Latin/Funk study draws its influence from the infectious grooves found on Incognito’s 1992 album release Tribes, Vibes and Scribes. Make sure you stay relaxed and use the grace notes effectively to enhance the syncopated rhythms and fills. Be careful to observe the regular 7/8 meter change and practise looping one or two bar sections before attempting the piece as a whole. The B section uses the snare drum rim to explore the timbre and requires good finger control to execute the various rolls effectively. Section C uses the classic samba ostinato to practise the various rudiments on the snare, as most teachers recommend.
