This webinar looked at specific strategies to support young learners of English who come from poor and vulnerable backgrounds. Teaching strategies and example activities were drawn from the speaker's own experience of working in a deprived area in Buenos Aires.
Summary
There was a focus on demonstrating successful strategies that make timely use of L1 to scaffold activities and lower affective filters, specifically at beginner to elementary level. The speaker also highlighted activities that support the development of linguistic mediation skills and how learners can connect the day-to-day mediation skills that they often carry out in real life. The relationship between cross-linguistic mediation and the development of collaborative and critical thinking skills to promote social inclusion were also be explored
About the presenter
Gigi Lynch has been teaching for over 30 years and has worked in primary and secondary schools in Buenos Aires, Argentina as a teacher, supervisor, examiner, materials developer, and curriculum designer and manager.
Since 2004 she has worked as the coordinator of English language at Mother Teresa School - a private institution that offers free high-quality education to students in social and economic vulnerable situations. It has been her goal to make the area of English in this school a thriving department that offers English language as another tool to help students break the cycle of poverty.
