Central to the success of ESOL provision in the UK FE and Adult Learning sectors are the courses that not only effectively prepare students to pass their ESOL Skills for Life exams, but which also ensure learners are ready and ‘on-level’ to progress to the next stage of their studies or into the world of work.
The choice of exam in ESOL is often based on common assumptions around ease of delivery and resourcing. However, this does not take into account a range of critical consequences of test choice that directly influence the development of skills that are instrumental to progression in the learning environment.
This short session looked at 5 key areas to consider in ESOL assessment and highlighted the longer-term impact on the learners, teaching staff, and their institutions. We explored the potential advantages of external assessment and working with Trinity College London as a quality ESOL exam provider.
