In this webinar, we explored immersive language learning through the use of virtual reality (VR) technology.
Summary
This Transformative Teachers webinar was designed to provide an introduction to those new to this way of teaching, and we were able to look at various approaches to VR and its benefits.
When we hear ‘immersive language learning’ we often think of travelling abroad to where the target language is spoken. Virtual reality technology allows language learners to immerse themselves in contextual settings and the target culture, and interact with other speakers of the language without leaving their home.
During the session, we defined VR; looked at what makes it interesting for language learning, which pedagogical approaches work best with VR, and how you can teach with or in VR. We will also discussed the potential downsides of VR. Finally, we provided some examples of platforms and apps that English language teachers can use.
